AS interface makes room in the control cabinet

April 2000 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

The new Smartline series available from IFM Electronic is an innovation in the area of AS-Interface.

AS-Interface (AS-i) slaves with digital inputs and outputs and are incorporated in this space-saving design. It is claimed, that for the first time, four inputs and four outputs have been successfully integrated within a width of only 25 mm. Addressing is done via the addressing socket on the front panel and can be implemented before mounting and after wiring in the control cabinet.

All peripheral signal states are indicated in the front display and where connection wires cannot obscure them. The devices are connected via three-row Combicon connections at the top and bottom which can be individually fitted with screw terminals, cage clamps or isolation displacement terminals (Quix). Since all connections are of the plug-in type, a module can be replaced without using a tool. This speeds up maintenance and makes commissioning easier.

The 25 mm wide Smartline family is available in versions with four inputs and four outputs, four inputs or four outputs with a maximum 2 A load current per output. In the future, a wider 50 mm version will also have relay outputs.

Another innovation from IFM is the use of AS-Interface slaves fitted with the newly developed A2SI chip which contains an E2PROM and operates to the specification 2.1. It can, for example, be used to evaluate an additional peripheral error bit. With the four-way input module, it is possible to double the number of participants per AS-i master – but to do so, a 2.1 version master is required. All AS-i Smartline modules can of course also be operated with existing controllers, or older installations can be retrofitted.
