Infrared thermometers

April 2002 Temperature Measurement

Major Tech recently introduced a range of noncontact infrared thermometers that are simple and easy to use. There are four models in the range which are designed to measure temperatures in areas where it is difficult or inaccessible for contact thermometers. All of the Major Tech infrared thermometers have laser beam sightings as well as a backlight for the LCD display so that readings may be obtained in badly lit areas.

The MT699, MT698 and MT697 are gun type compact designs and offer a range of features such as min, max and average recording, data hold function, °C or °F selectable, auto power off, operation lock which keeps the thermometer permanently on without having to hold the trigger switch, all have a response time of 500 ms, and a spot ratio of 8:1. A great new feature in these three meters is the K type input range, which allows the user to utilise the infrared thermometers as normal contact thermometers by using K type probes.

The MT699 has a measuring range from -18 to +1000°C, and MT698 can measure from -40 to +510°C while the MT697 measures from -18 to +510°C. The MT694 is a low-cost meter designed for daily use and measures from -18°C to 260°C.

Applications and uses for the infrared thermometers include

* HVAC and refrigeration field services.

* Electrical and mechanical systems.

* Vehicle maintenance.

* Asphalt and roofing.

* Machinery and equipment.

* Printing.

* Food processing and inspection.
