Tri-axial shock and vibration recorder

February 2002 Industrial Computer Hardware

The ShockLog RD 298 tri-axial shock and vibration recorder has been designed to monitor shock and vibration based on acceleration or velocity measurements. It has several unique features, making it suitable for protecting high-value, fixed or mobile installations and investigating shock and vibration during transportation. Using additional external sensors, it is also able to record humidity and pressure. In normal operation, the device checks the output of the three built-in accelerometers, temperature sensor and any external sensors once every 10 seconds, storing the information in nonvolatile memory.

If any of the accelerometer signals or external sensors exceeds the 'wake up' threshold, the processor will check the sensor output at a much faster rate (up to 4000 samples/s). If the output exceeds the warning or trip thresholds, the ShockLog RD 298 will flash its status lamps accordingly. In addition, the detailed time history of the first event to set a warning, the first to set an alarm and subsequent severe events up to the installed memory capacity will be recorded.

The ShockLog RD 298 needs no external switches and with its own indelible security log, the unit is tamper-proof. The complete electronic and transducer package is coated in an acrylic resin and enclosed in a metal case, making it rugged enough to suit any number of applications.

The construction technique used has resulted in a unit that offers high immunity to electrical interference, and very low levels of RF emissions, allowing it to be used safely in close proximity to sensitive instruments or in difficult electrical environments.

Applications where the ShockLog RD 298 is used worldwide include the transport industry, specific to the transportation of specialised equipment including transformers, as well as pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, chemicals and nuclear materials. Structural damage and seismic activity can also be measured and identified using this system.
