November 2017 Temperature Measurement

Temperature measurement is one of the most important measurements in the process industry. Product quality, process safety and energy consumption all depend on temperature, so parameters like accuracy, repeatability, response time and hygienic construction all become important. The modular design of the Endress+Hauser's iTherm TM411 is based on thin-film Pt100 sensors in accuracy class A or AA, which are respectively two or three times more accurate than the standard sensors. Having the temperature transmitter located on the terminal head allows the Pt100 sensor error to be minimised by transmitting the factor of uncertainty of measurement to the transmitter in order to match the two - sensor and transmitter.

This allows the use of the actual Pt100 sensor parameters instead of the ideal when it is connected to the temperature transmitter iTemp TMT82. This configuration gives more accurate control of temperature with a narrower range of volatility, resulting in higher production quality and reduced energy consumption.

The hygienic construction is compliant with the guFDA and ASME guidelines. The lack of dead zones and low roughness (0,38 m) obtained by electro polishing of the surface, guarantees excellent cleaning during both CIP and SIP processes. IP69K protection allows the thermometer to be washed from the outside, using high pressure hose cleaners.

Thanks to the modular design, iTherm TM411 can be ordered with over 50 different process connections, while the thin walled design with reduced tip makes faster response times possible.

Damaged sensors can be replaced without interrupting the process, as the design allows easy access to the terminals through the integral cable guide. The instrument has an optional cover which is resistant to bumps, and the sight glass allows the temperature display to be observed on units equipped with a display.

iTherm QuickSens

QuickSens technology enables fast shortest-response times. Endress+Hauser sensors based on this technology are up to seven times faster than traditional Pt100 devices. This allows precise measurements, even when process temperatures are changing fast. Better heat transfer from the process to the sensor also allows minimum sensor immersion length, which gives a cost saving through the shorter probe length.

iTherm QuickNeck

Many years of experience by Endress+Hauser service engineers in the calibration of temperature sensors has contributed to the innovation of the QuickNeck, which allows the head and measuring insert to be removed without any tools.

The QuickNeck bayonet creates a tight connection with degree of protection IP69K, which can be removed by hand, thus calibration of the measuring insert can be carried out without interrupting the process. During calibration, the sensor remains connected, which eliminates the possibility of mistakes occurring during reconnection.

These modern techniques applied to hygienic thermometers increase the accuracy, shorten the calibration time, reduce energy consumption and ensure higher quality in food and beverage applications.
