Instrument suppliers are developing field devices with HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus and other standard protocols, which allow users easy access to the configuration data. Bluetooth has subsequently made an appearance in field devices as a solution to improve the efficiency of technicians by giving them even more convenient access.
Endress+Hauser’s SmartBlue Bluetooth app offers access by simply using a mobile phone or tablet, allowing personnel to do instrument configuration from the palm of their hand. In hazardous zones certified devices may be required, but the distance of 25 metres available in Bluetooth devices may often be enough to access the device from outside the hazardous area. The Bluetooth Interest Group recently announced the next generation of the protocol, Bluetooth 5, where with the extended range will deliver robust, reliable IoT connections, with the range quadrupled, double the speed and an increased data broadcasting capacity.
The SmartBlue app
SmartBlue allows users to see the diagnostics from all the instruments based on the NE 107. Another feature is easy access to the information about tag, health and process variables. It is also possible to analyse the process condition and perform mapping, if there are queries, data can be saved and sent to the local technician at Endress+Hauser who will provide support.
To download the app simply go to the AppStore and search for Endress+Hauser SmartBlue.
