Keeping cabinet interiors cool

January 2002 Temperature Measurement

'Cabinet Coolers' are devices that make use of the vortex tube principle to produce refrigerated air streams. Using only compressed air, and having no moving parts, they are well suited to keeping delicate electronics, and the like, at a safe operating temperature in the most rugged of environments. (High temperature models are available, capable of coping with ambient temperatures as high as 93°C.)

These cabinet coolers can be installed in minutes (through a standard conduit knockout) - made from stainless steel they exhibit long operational lives, without the need for any maintenance. There is no concern over CFCs, the devices can permit the user to maintain NEMA 4/4X and NEMA 12 integrity. Washdown protection is included. Other advantages include the prevention of dirt contamination and the elimination of any need for fans and filters.

Vortex tube technology can produce cooling air temperature as low as -46°C. The cabinet coolers are available in different sizes and models, to suit various needs. The picture shows the model 4830 NEMA 4 cabinet cooler, which keeps the interior cooled with air at -6,5°C, while keeping the inside dry.
