Philips appoints Escort Memory Systems as I•Code-Net partner

December 2001 News

Escort Memory Systems (EMS), a leading supplier of proven, innovative RFID technologies, recently announced its appointment into the I•Code-Net partnership program.

Philips has specifically designed this program to ensure that end-user applications are serviced by experienced, skilful and professional companies able to deliver I•Code-Net-based solutions that match end-user expectations.

EMS has successfully delivered I•Code solutions in the marketplace since the beginning of 1999. Its FastTrack series of tags use Philips I•Code-Net technology. Coupled with EMS' unique, patented design, this technology has enabled the most advanced, long-range readers in the RFID industry. EMS' growing presence in applications ranging from identifying smart pallets to tracking priority mail packages and even cars, has enhanced its reputation across the board.

Suresh Palliparambil, Marketing Manager EMS states that: "The world is migrating from reusable to disposable tags, more and more end-users are seeing the added value in tracking items from manufacturing to retail and extending it to 'after sales service'. Different companies and users will share the cost of this technology, as the entire supply chain will benefit from the technology. Toyota South Africa is a perfect example."

International Standard for 13,56 MHz RFID technologies imminent

13,56 MHz radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, used in contactless cards and RFID smart labels, reached a milestone on the way towards full international standardisation with the recent unanimous vote by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) to make ISO/IEC 15693-2 an international standard.

About I•Code

Smart labelling is the latest RFID technology, combining the advantages of bar code, electronic article surveillance (EAS) and traditional RFID solutions. Designed to serve mass markets that would consume millions of labels needed per year, Philips Semiconductors' I•Code-Net integrated circuits (ICs) represent state-of-the-art smart label technology, offering a low-cost, re-programmable and disposable solution for source tagging, automatic data capture, theft protection and data storage on a product or its packaging. I•Code-Net smart labels allow almost any item to be tagged for efficient handling. I•Code-Net's highly automated item scanning process does not require line-of-sight and can scan multiple labels at the same time. I•Code-Net ICs can also store a digital signature, enabling proof of authenticity and preventing goods from being counterfeited. More information on I•Code-Net is available at the Philips website: www.semiconductors.philips.com/identification/products/icode
