German-based GHM Messtechnik has recently opened a dedicated South African subsidiary in Alberton, Gauteng and offers German quality measurement instrumentation technology suited to meeting the specific requirements of the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.
Managing director, Jan Grobler said: “The South African food and beverage and pharmaceutical sectors require measurement technology that offers precision and reliability while complying with stringent local hygiene regulations. GHM Messtechnik provides complete technological solutions through the consolidation of four companies. We believe that food hygiene processes can only be safeguarded by the producer when the measurement technology utilised in this industry comprises a hygienic design and conforms to all applicable laws, which GHM’s technology does.”
The media used in the food industry often changes properties in regard to density, consistency, conductivity and temperature. Boilers, tanks and similar containers are filled with the widest range of media to which cleaning processes must be adapted and modified. GHM supplies devices that offer safe and reliable measurement for all these processes.
“Two of our strongest features as a company are our flexibility and innovation, which enable us to offer innovative solutions to our customers,” he continued. “Our investment in research and development means we can develop measurement instrumentation technology to meet current and future specific requirements associated with the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors.”
Key competencies that are satisfied by GHM include:
• Hygienic design for cleaning and sterilisation
• CIP/SIP compatible measurement technology.
• Stainless steel sensors.
• FDA-compliant materials.
• EHEDG certifications.
• 3A approvals.
• Protection rating IP67/IP69K.
The use of materials that come into contact with media is well documented by the FDA and 3A. All GHM’s sensor parts that come into contact with media and are close to the process are capable of withstanding the cyclical cleaning and sterilisation temperatures outlined by the abovementioned standards associations.
Temperature measurement
GHM offers more than 30 different basic designs in its new GTL temperature sensor series, all of which are suited for use in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries, and are European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG) certified. The sensors offer wide ranges of length and diameter, with the transducers being configured to customer requirements. The correct configuration can be achieved by the customer by using the GTL programming tool.
CIP/SIP Cleaning
The food sector demands that sensors must be suitable for Clean in Place (CIP) and Sterilisation in Place (SIP) processes, and these create the highest demand on housing, electronics and sensors. GHM devices and components are all designed specifically for these expected conditions. Process connections that are designed to eliminate dead space permit all methods of modern and environmentally compatible cleaning and sterilisation.
“GHM is a committed player in the South African and sub-Saharan markets. Our intention is to not only establish ourselves as the preferred supplier of measurement instrumentation to these specific sectors, but across a range of industries where accuracy and high performance technologies are essential to the cost-effective running of a plant. GHM’s German-inspired philosophy of offering a superior and innovative instrumentation solution, coupled with a personalised and professional customer service ethic, is what makes us stand out in the crowd.” concluded Grobler.
GHM Messtechnik GmbH was launched in 2009 and is an amalgamation of globally renowned companies comprising Greisinger Electronic, Honsberg Instruments, Martens Elektronik, Imtron, T & A Telemetry & Automation and Delta Ohm.
