In order to perform power regulating functions, the AC sinusoidal output wave phase or form can be manipulated in one of two ways:
• Through utilising phase control, where the output waveform is altered.
• Through utilising cycle calculation zero voltage switching, where the output wave cycle is altered.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Phase control does not cause any flickering, but can cause electrical noise or harmonic disturbances. It is suited for both resistive (electric heaters) and inductive (transformer primary) loads. Cycle calculation zero voltage switching can produce flickering, especially at low cycle duties, but does not cause any harmonics. It is suited for resistive loads only.
With Shimaden’s new PAC18 power regulator, this functionality is selectable with no hardware changes required. This innovation is an intelligent way of adapting standard stock units for different applications, where either noise or flickering possibilities may cause problems. Keeping one standard unit that is application adaptable, saves time and reduces overall inventory costs.
