Inline contamination monitoring on hydraulic systems

Technews Industry Guide - Maintenance, Reliability & Asset Optimisation 2016 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Seventy to eighty percent of all failures on hydraulic systems are due to contaminants in the hydraulic fluid. Monitoring the concentration of particles in the various process fluids is seen to be an essential part of contamination control.

Automatic particle counters are beneficial monitoring tools that assist in measuring the levels of contaminants within any hydraulic system. They accurately measure the number of particles of various sizes in a short space of time. According to Geoff Grant, product manager for MP Filtri UK, the importance of cleanliness in hydraulic fluid power systems is essential for the optimum performance and reliability of such a system.

Automatic Particle Counters are able to detect small but significant increases in the number of particles, allowing the system to flag this once the levels increase beyond a specified point. To reduce the amount of wear on the system components, regular or continuous sampling is recommended through a permanently installed automatic particle counter, so that data is collected and analysed on an ongoing basis.

Hydrasales is the southern African distributor for the MP Filtri Inline Contamination Monitor (ICM), which automatically measures and displays the particulate contamination, moisture and temperature levels in various hydraulic fluids. It is designed specifically to be mounted directly to systems where ongoing measurement or analysis is required, and where space and costs are limited.

The ICM can be used as a standalone product or can be controlled by an external computer, PLC or ICM remote display unit. It is compatible with mineral oil, subsea and water based fluids, as well as phosphate esters and other aggressive fluids. It is available with or without moisture and temperature sensors.
