Oil heating system for a new printing process
November 2001
Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration
Cape Wrappers of Paarl in the Western Cape, a leading supplier of printed packaging, have recently installed new equipment to increase their processing of solvent as well as solvent-less adhesives in the lamination of printed packaging materials.
UniTemp was awarded the contract to design, manufacture and commission a diathermic oil heating system with the required controls for the new process at Cape Wrappers. Time has been of the essence in this project in order to bring the new printing machine into operation as the oil heater itself was beyond the scope of supply of the machine supplier abroad. The choice was local manufacture versus awarding the contract to an overseas subcontractor.
UniTemp has been a supplier to Cape Wrappers for heating and control for more than eight years and has shown in the past the capability of taking heating projects from design to commissioning. The oil heater has a heating capacity of 240 kW. To increase long-term reliability and element life UniTemp engineers opted for an imported 16 mm diameter incoloy rod element.
The 45 elements will supply sufficient heating capacity to get the oil to 220°C. Oil circulation is guaranteed through a specially imported pump capable to run at the required temperature. Control of the system is through Gefran temperature controllers switching the elements via Gefran GTS solid-state relays.
