The new encoders from ifm electronic offer a real alternative to traditional photoelectric encoders. This is a result of their magnetic operating principle, in combination with unique signal evaluation supported by powerful microcontrollers. With extended, intelligent functions, they are flexible enough to suit a range of applications in the field of motion control. Unique features include the display, operating keys and user-friendly parameter setting and diagnostics via IO-Link.
Firstly, they can be used as incremental encoders. The resolution between 2 and 10 000 pulses/revolution can be freely set. The units can also be used as counters. The direction of counting (up/down) and the switch points can also be selected. The third operating mode is used for rotational speed monitoring. The user sets a rotational speed range. The outputs switch when the current value is above or below the limit values, allowing the encoders to operate automatically as rotational speed or standstill monitoring systems.
All functions and parameters can be set on the unit via pushbuttons and LED display. During operation the current pulse, count or rotational speed values are displayed according to the set mode. Red or green LEDs immediately indicate if the machine is in the acceptable range or if limit values have been exceeded. Furthermore, the display can be rotated electronically by 180°, allowing flexible installation positions. Parameters can be set directly on the encoder or through a user-friendly IO-Link. The high shock and vibration resistance enables use in harsh environments. The cable entry or the rotatable M12 connection for connector units can be used both radially and axially. The selection of the suitable encoder is reduced to the matching flange and shaft. Everything else can be freely configured by the user. ifm also offers a basic encoder version for use when the pushbuttons and display are not required. This version can also be set completely via IO-Link.
