Airconditioning control solution for airport terminal

November 2001 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Enviroware Construction has secured the contract to supply and implement an airconditioning monitoring and control system for the new domestic terminal at the Johannesburg International Airport utilising equipment from Honeywell Southern Africa.

Started in April 2001, the R20m contract will interface 296 LON terminal VAV/FCU units and 71 airconditioning plants in offices and public areas of the new domestic terminal. The new system will integrate with an existing Rockwell PLC system using a Honeywell OPC (Ole for Process Control) interface embedded in a scada package - Honeywell's EBI.

According to Johan Buys of Enviroware, challenges facing the project include the installation of 2580 hard-wired control points to 373 controllers that will allow the HVAC system to monitor and control temperature to ±1,5°C and humidity between 40 to 60°C.

The Honeywell OPC interface is a communication link between the existing Rockwell PLC system and the Honeywell EBI system. Rockwell uses the RSView32 package as graphical interface. The RSView32 creates a window on the entire control and monitoring system that allows adjustments, logging, servicing setpoints and data trending for analysis at any stage.

The EBI system is a modular, supervisory control system that incorporates leading edge, open-system technologies to provide comprehensive facilities in an economical and easy-to-use package. An important requirement for any scada-type solution is reliable and efficient communications. With EBI, communications have been optimised for use over poor-quality, low-bandwidth links. In addition, communications between the server and controllers are optimised to reduce the required bandwidth.

EBI integrates with a wide range of Honeywell and third-party equipment, thereby protecting existing capital investment and enabling easy integration of process information from various sources. Control and monitoring information is readily accessible by operators, engineers and MIS level computer systems facilitating consistent operation, higher productivity and cost reductions.

In Southern Africa Honeywell Home & Building Control works in close partnership with installation companies and system integrators providing them with the equipment and technology they require to implement control solutions for heating, ventilation, humidification, airconditioning, security and fire detection and building management systems and services.

Through Honeywell's comprehensive Enterprise Building Integrator (EBI), installation partners are able to provide either standalone or fully integrated solutions utilising enterprise systems, Internet and intranet sources and a diverse range of devices to enable intelligent management of key facility information, regardless of building type and location.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
