October 2001Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration
Iscor's experience with Revere loadcells proving accurate and reliable on various weighing applications resulted in the company specifying them for the Richards Bay Heavy Minerals plant. Some 200 loadcells for 60 silos/tanks were supplied at a contract value of R1 million.
Instrotech, the sole distributor for these Dutch-manufactured loadcells has been working with IHM design engineers for the past two years developing weighing systems for the storage and process tanks. Iscor Heavy Minerals extracts minerals such as titanium, high mineral iron, ilmenite, zircon, etc, from sand deposits.
Each tank is fitted with weighing or level measurement so that the computer control system would have continuous inputs. The control system information is linked into the plant management system, thus streamlining on-line logistics. For the critical high-accuracy weighing applications, Instrotech has installed Revere stainless steel load cells, which are hermetically sealed and ideal for adverse wet and dusty conditions. The semi-critical applications are pivoted systems, which save on loadcells. Where only level measurement is required, bolt-on strain gauge transducers are used. This method is becoming popular as it is non-contact, simple to install and reliable.
Loadcell mountings are custom made by Instrotech in 3CR12 and stainless steel. Antilift-off bolts were incorporated into the mounting design taking into account that most silos are outdoors and could be exposed to strong winds.
All the loadcell transmitters supplied are locally designed by Instrotech, who have been manufacturing these products for over 20 years.
