Improved combustion efficiency for power generation

July 2014 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The RCA MI 2200 residual carbon analyser from M&W Asketeknik provides plant personnel with real-time information on combustion efficiency through continuous monitoring of the unburnt carbon content in the fly-ash. The RCA MI 2200 assists coal fired power plants by improving their combustion efficiency, coal mill performance and quality of fly-ash for sale. The RCA MI 2200 is a reliable, low maintenance on-line monitoring instrument which reduces the need for labour intensive laboratory analysis.

The ash sampler is a low maintenance device with no moveable parts. Pumping power is provided by utilising the pressure difference between the ambient air and inside of the duct. This pressure difference drives an adjustable ejector. This design also means that extraction velocity automatically adapts to changes in the flow rate in the duct.

The control unit undertakes the processing of the transducer signals and controls all functions of the individual RCA components. The operator’s control panel displays menu selection and error messages as well as the real-time carbon in ash content.

As the RCA MI 2200 monitors the amount of residual carbon in the fly-ash and it also monitors the effective utilisation of the fuel. A suitable low amount of residual carbon indicates good fuel utilisation and good fuel economy. High values of residual carbon in the fly-ash can often be traced to coal mill performance.

Due to the increased focus on protection of the environment, fly-ash is now often used in asphalt, cement and concrete applications. The RCA MI 2200 monitors the residual carbon content of the fly-ash which is crucial for such applications. Fly-ash has been transformed from a waste product to a valuable resource.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
