Siemens launches Simogear and TIA Portal V13 in South Africa

July 2014 News

Higher productivity, faster time to market, more efficient use of resources and high flexibility are some of the key needs facing the industry at the moment. Hosting key customers in the mechanical and automation industries in the Western Cape, Siemens provided a technical showcase for industrial applications for the future.

“As one of the world’s leading automation and drives suppliers, we have the right answers; innovative products and systems, integrated applications and solutions as well as end-to-end service throughout the entire production lifecycle,” said Raymond Padayachee, CEO Siemens Industry, Southern Africa.

Siemens business unit manager for mechanical drives, Michael Cardoso, was on hand to introduce customers to the new range of Simogear geared motors. The focus of the Simogear geared motor range is general materials handling, in particular the automotive, logistics and food and beverage industries. These motors are also used in the chemical industry, in crane technology, in environmental and water technology, as well as in metal production and mining industry.

The new Simogear gear motor delivers performance from 0,09 up to 55 kW. It can achieve a gear unit torque of up to 8000 Nm with helical, parallel shaft, helical bevel and worm geared gear units. Having market conforming dimensions, the latest Simogear geared motors are 1:1 compatible to the current standard and are an economic alternative for easy replacements in existing installations or to implement in new design. For applications that demand a particularly high degree of precision when positioning, Siemens offers the gear units in a low backlash version. Ductile iron housings can be supplied for harsh ambient conditions with high vibration and shock loads, added Cardoso.

In a bid to offer its customers the assurance of maximum productivity and efficiency for their plants and machines in the years to come, Siemens continues to extend the integration of its hardware and software product portfolio. A dynamic way to achieve this is the Integrated Drive System (IDS), a concept based on the optimised drive train. This is done by drawing on the vast Siemens portfolio of gear units, couplings, motors, and converters, which can be combined and optimised to customer specifications.

The newly launched Version 13 of the TIA Portal presented by Sanjay Palad, business unit manager for Automation Systems in South Africa has been improved in a number of functional areas – the diagnostic concept, know-how protection and synchronised team cooperation for large-scale projects have all been optimised. In addition, engineering tools such as the Simatic WinCC V13 Scada (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) software have been integrated into the standardised work environment. Palad combined his presentation with an overview of Siemens latest generation of controllers – Simatic S7- 1500. Characterised by high performance and efficiency it features outstanding system performance and a host of standard integrated functions including motion control, security and safety.

“Siemens has been active in South Africa for more than 150 years, during which it has helped South Africa grow. This launch is just another demonstration of our commitment to the region,” concluded Padayachee.
