Temperature Measurement

Fibre-optic thermometer

September 2001 Temperature Measurement

Suitable for hostile environments and difficult-to-see applications, the Raytek range of fibre-optic thermometers from Prei Instrumentation can monitor temperatures from 250 to 3000°C. Each unit consists of a stainless steel sensor (19 mm diameter by 63 mm long) connected by a fibre-optic cable to a small box of electronics. The sensor and cable can operate in temperatures up to 200°C and the system is rated IP65.

The accuracy of these fibre-optic thermometers is 0,3% of the measured value, ±1°C and they are repeatable to ±1°C. The sampling interval of the unit is 10 ms, adjustable to 10 s. The optical resolution (distance to spot size) can be as high as 100:1. The electronic outputs of 4-20 mA and RS485 are directly proportional to the temperature measured and the temperature range is user-selectable. Power supply required is 24 V d.c. Included are Windows programs for PCs allowing remote parameter setting, data acquisition, graphic display of data and RS485 multidrop network configuration. These fibre-optic thermometers are particularly useful for moulds, laser welding and bulk glass.
