Dual input smart temperature transmitter

September 2001 Temperature Measurement

In keeping with ongoing development of smart technology, Honeywell has introduced the STT25T, an extension to the well-established range of STT250 temperature transmitters. The product is aimed at reducing installation costs associated with wiring separate transmitters.

Compact in size, the STT25T is a convenient retrofit utilising direct head-mounting of two temperature sensors in the same housing. Using either thermocouples or resistance temperature detectors (RTD), or a combination thereof, provides valuable features in key applications.

In high-temperature applications where the high-accuracy RTD may possibly be damaged, the STT25T solution provides a thermocouple backup. The transmitter may also be configured to validate drift or raise an alarm in duplex/dual thermocouples or RTDs if specific differences between the two values occur.

A 4 to 20 mA output with HART communication protocol provides ease of interrogation, using on-line diagnostics or remote access, including sensor monitoring. A hard-wire link enables selection of upscale or downscale failsafe in the event of a failure, ensuring appropriate failsafe action. Another useful feature is the ability to select latching or nonlatching failsafe where intermittent sensor problems can force corrective action or clear if the error disappears.

Sensor integrity is maintained by allowing the use of dissimilar sensor input types, reducing the possibility of degradation. A full range of sensors and thermowell accessories is available from Honeywell Southern Africa, enabling an integrated transmitter/sensor/thermowell solution.
