ABB's service operation and the Wearcheck Africa division of Set Point Technology have entered into a strategic alliance to offer a complete condition monitoring service for industrial equipment incorporating vibration analysis, thermography and oil analysis. "This new service will assist in the effective maintenance of industrial plant at installations throughout southern Africa ranging from coal mines to sugar mills," said Toni de Sousa, who is responsible for service at ABB, a leading maintenance service provider to industry.

Oil sampling and the collection of vibration and thermal imaging data will be carried out on site by trained technicians and the results will be submitted to customers electronically.

"Having the results of all three condition monitoring tests available simultaneously and diagnosed holistically will provide maximum information for technicians to evaluate a component's health timeously. This streamlines the process, increasing its effectiveness in helping to avoid costly breakdowns, loss of production and unnecessary maintenance costs," de Sousa said.

According to Gary Brown of Wearcheck, one of Africa's largest independent oil analysis companies, customers may also opt for a second, more extensive oil analysis service as part of the condition-monitoring package.

"This includes wear particle examination on every sample together with an image of the particles observed microscopically, and a Total Acid Number determination on samples to detect any oxidation of the oil," Brown said.
