Application overview
For road and highway systems the safe and efficient flow of traffic through intersections is paramount. Traffic is controlled at the intersection of roads by traffic lights and traffic signals to ensure there are no accidents or collisions. In some traffic signal control systems the period of green signals and red signals can change depending on the time of day and traffic conditions, as can the duration that pedestrians can cross roads in front of stationary traffic. To meet all these requirements of a real-time interconnected system, Allpronix’s JetBox 9300 is the ideal embedded platform due to its robust design, compact form factor, reliable RISC processor and multitude of interfaces for connection to communications equipment and redundant communications equipment.
The ruggedised compact design makes the JetBox 9300 series suitable to be mounted in a roadside outdoor cabinet that is exposed to the most extreme weather conditions. The RISC processor technology provides the stability and reliability required for real-time traffic signal control and the networking support to interconnect signals and the traffic control centre. The serial device server and digital inputs and outputs allows for connectivity to the traffic signal and for that serial and I/O communication to be accessed anywhere on the network. For leased line modems and WAN communications equipment there are four serial ports and four Ethernet ports, allowing the flexibility to connect to any device and also the option of connecting to a redundant link such as a 3G/GSM/GPRS modem. The four Ethernet (PoE optional) ports allow multiple IP cameras and or red light cameras to be connected and the images and video to be stored locally and accessed remotely.
Design features
* Ruggedised industrial design, wide operating temperature, fanless, dustproof and DIN rail mountable suitable for installation in an outdoor roadside cabinet.
* Reliable RISC processor with Linux support for customised real-time control and networking applications.
* Serial and I/O to connect WAN / leased line service and traffic signals.
* Connectivity for IP cameras and red light cameras.

System Integration & Control Systems Design
The last ten years have brought about dramatic advances in technologies that OEMs had never realised would affect their designs or the saleability of their machines, much less impact business models and profits so dramatically. The following discussion will cover key advancements and recommendations all OEMs should be adopting in their design processes to stay current and competitive.
