Data supply in milliseconds

February 2013 Sensors & Transducers

The Leuze ODS 96B optical laser distance sensor detects highly dynamic processes by performing unusually high frequency measurements. The unit’s measurement time of two milliseconds permits dynamic processes to be measured up to five times faster than comparable products. Featuring CCD technology, it facilitates dynamic product measurement processes on conveyors for positioning assignments and gripper applications. The sensor covers a measurement range from 60 to 2000 mm.

The faster measurement time results in a more tightly meshed, finely graduated grid giving precise information coupled with more stable measured values. This means enhanced process efficiency, particularly in applications involving high gloss, or structured or dark surfaces where fluctuations in temperature occur.

Faster measurement sequences also give the units a higher level of precision. The measurement accuracy of the Leuze ODS 96B is around ±1% with a repeat of ±0,5%. Precise measurement reduces the time required for re-adjustment and settling processes.

An easily legible LED display with membrane keypad simplifies visualisation and operation. It indicates measured values in millimetres, which are easily legible even in strong sunlight.

The complete configuration of switching points and measurement ranges, through to filter settings for pre-filtration of measurement data directly at the device, is possible with the aid of menu prompting. This also includes the selection of operating modes such as shine, precision or speed. A diagnostic routine requiring neither cables, software or cable adaptors can also be performed via the device. All of these are integrated features of the Leuze ODS 96B.

One of the special features of the compact sensor is an integrated IO-Link interface in addition to the conventional RS232 and RS485 interfaces. This is used as a serial bi-directional communication interface for point-to-point connections.
