Monitoring in the bleaching tower

October 2012 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Monitoring pH and ORP in the bleaching tower exposes pH electrodes to high temperatures and harsh conditions, shortening electrode life and leading to higher maintenance. Mettler Toledo offers its Ingold InPro 4801 SG flat glass pH electrode in a titanium hot-tap housing, along with the M800 transmitter, as a high-performance measuring point for use in the pulp and paper industry.

The InPro 4801 solution ground (SG) flat glass pH electrode is a low maintenance, dual-purpose electrode that is ideal for high temperature and high pressure environments. It is specially designed for operation in oxidant media and, due to its flat membrane glass, is much less susceptible to fouling. Moreover, it allows the measurement of both pH and redox simultaneously off the same electrode.

The M800 multi-parameter transmitter provides simultaneous monitoring of up to four in-line sensors with intelligent sensor management (ISM) technology for measurement of pH/ORP, optical DO, amperometric oxygen, conductivity, resistivity, dissolved ozone and flow.

The InPro 4801 SG electrode offers reliable measurements in oxidising media, strong acid or alkali solutions and sulphide-bearing media. The hot-tap style housing allows for continuous and safe access to the electrode, meaning that maintenance can be done without interrupting the process, despite the high operational pressure. In addition, the electrode performs for a long period of time before cleaning or calibration is required, thus reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

The InPro 4801 SG with a flat glass membrane and solution ground feature is the optimal choice for media with particles and fibres. Ground loops can be avoided with the solution ground, which can also be used as a diagnostic tool. The SG feature as an entire electrode body coating or as a measuring point on a pH-electrode, will improve grounding and effectively eliminate the risk of electrostatic interference. SG also improves advanced diagnostic functions, and makes parallel pH/redox measurement possible.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
