Allpronix's continuous online density transmitters

August 2012 Sensors & Transducers

Continuous online density transmitters can increase profitability at food, beverage and pharmaceutical production plants. An instrument developed for the continuous, online measurement of liquid concentration and density, directly in the industrial process, is often a must for accurate process control and reliable end product quality.

When installed on fluid lines delivering ingredients into food product manufacturing processes, density transmitters help ensure that quality products are produced at optimal cost. Knowing the accurate density of liquid ingredients and products in the process forms an integral part of automated recipe control and batching at many food, beverage & pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. By accurately monitoring the liquid concentration and density of the ingredients directly in the process, the recipe’s status can constantly be monitored by the automation system. That information is then used in conjunction with predetermined density/concentration levels to control the amount of product entering the recipe mix.

Important qualities that a manufacturing plant should look for when installing a density transmitter include high accuracy, sanitary fittings, stainless steel wetted parts, universal communication protocols, low maintenance, flexible installation options, multiple engineering units output and a non-nuclear measuring technique. These qualities will assist in reducing the running costs of an automated recipe control system and increase the efficiency of the plant. Most importantly, it will increase the quality of the end product.

The Smar DT301 and its pioneer technology consist of a capacitive type differential pressure sensor coupled to a pair of pressure repeaters immersed in the process (all stainless steel). A temperature sensor is located between the two pressure repeaters and is used to compensate for the temperature variations in the process fluid. Dedicated software, by means of an algorithm, then accurately calculates the fluid density.

Depending on the industrial process, density may be expressed in Brix degree, Gay-Lussac degree, Baume degree, Plato degree or % concentration. Designed for process control applications, these two-wire transmitters generate a 4–20 mA signal proportionate to the concentration/density. Digital communication for remote calibration and monitoring is also provided. These units are also available with Profibus PA and Foundation Fieldbus communication capabilities.

The device offers advantages that include accuracy to within 0,03%, easy mechanical installation since it is a single integrated unit and wiring is also easier as it is two-wire loop powered and requires no auxiliary supply. Unlike nuclear density transmitters, the DT301 requires no special permits, handling or swipe tests. The DT301 is an all-in-one non-nuclear instrument which is a simple cost effective solution to continuous density and concentration measurement for optimising automated recipe control and batching systems.
