On-line monitoring in wastewater applications

July 2012 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Analysers On-Line is the southern African agent for German based LAR Process Analysers, a company that specialises in on-line analyser equipment for industrial and environmental water monitoring applications. LAR analyser systems offer fast, accurate and continuous determination of up to six sample streams without any cross contamination. Most systems operate catalyst fee, with sample analysis taking between 1 and 4 minutes. Measurements include:

* COD (chemical oxygen demand).

* TOC (total organic carbon).

* TC (total carbon).

* TIC (total inorganic carbon).

* DOC (dissolved organic carbon).

* BOD (biological oxygen demand).

* TN (total bound nitrogen).

* TP (total phosphorus).

* TOD (total oxygen demand).

* Ammonia.

LAR analysers are capable of True TOC and COD values. True TOC is possible as the system is capable of measuring the non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC), volatile organic carbon, particulate organic carbon and dissolved organic carbon, in one catalyst free analysis. True COD is obtained by measuring the total oxygen demand. The correlation between TOD/COD is accurate to a factor between 0,9 and 1. Correlation between TOC and a COD can be problematic, especially where industrial waste discharge in effluent streams is concerned: LAR analysers offer users the True value.°°C for complete oxidation of all substances. This high temperature method works without any dangerous or caustic substances. There is no disposal of analysis residues, cleaning solutions or harmful reagents necessary. The highest operating safety and easiest processing is guaranteed at all times. Easy gas calibration and validation is also possible so no more expensive calibration standards.

Analysers operate without filtration systems. The patented maintenance free sampling system ‘FlowSampler’ ensures suitability for even difficult applications with high particle density. With the assistance of the homogeniser, a uniform sample is prepared and therefore particles are also measured and oxidised in the high temperature reactor. The new LAR Ultra Analyser system can combine up to four different parameters – COD, TOC, TN, TP. Approved DIN EN 1484, ISO 8245 and EPA 415 methods are used.

All systems offer continuous results for monitoring and controlling via an industrial grade CPU, menu-driven software, graphic LCD touch screen, presentation of the measured values in graphical or in table form, display of calibration values, daily protocol or 24-hour graph and data storage for one year. A USB memory card stores the operational software for automatic start-up and calibration procedure in the event of power loss or interruption.

The LAR analyser systems are low maintenance and with low consumable costs. Each system comes pre-configured to the application specification, ready for commissioning and installation on site.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
