Zirconia oxygen/humidity analysers

July 2001 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Yokogawa is offering what it calls the next generation of zirconia oxygen/humidity measurement products. The EXAxt ZR series zirconia products are developed from the proven ZA8/Z021 series of instruments. These new, simple and innovative products help conserve energy and control emissions to ensure a cleaner, safer environment. The EXAxt ZR products are designed for dependable and accurate oxygen concentration measurements for process control and monitoring. Ideal for use in boilers, kilns, furnaces and process heaters.

The product's interactive touchscreen display, simultaneous measurement of three separate parameters, field rebuildable modular design and Hart communications make it a useful and easy-to-use instrument.

Developed from the field-proven Z021D zirconia probe technology, the EXAxt ZR22 in situ type zirconia detector provides dependable and accurate oxygen and humidity measurement. Available in lengths from 150 mm to 5 m, the ZR22 can be used in process temperatures up to 700°C and pressurised ducts up to 250 kPa with the pressure compensating option.

The ZR probe's in situ measurement method does not require any process conditioning or extractive sampling. This reduces maintenance costs and allows faster measurement response to changes in the process. The new probe's modular design incorporates a rebuildable heater and thermocouple assembly, the industry standard Yokogawa zirconia cell and removable reference and calibration lines to create an oxygen measurement product designed for simple, quick and low-cost field maintenance.

The EXAxt ZR402 analyser is claimed to be the industry's newest and most advanced remote mounted zirconia oxygen analyser. The ZR402 features the functionality of the Yokogawa ZA8C oxygen analyser. Functions such as automatic calibration control, sensor diagnostics and efficiency calculations are standard with this product. It also features advances such as easy-to-read, simple-to-use, LCD touchscreen operation; realtime trend graphing of process variables; two user-configurable analog outputs; and three user-configurable measurement parameters including oxygen concentration, relative humidity, dewpoint and moisture content.

The EXAxt ZR202 transmitter/detector combines benefits of the ZR402 remote analyser and the ZR22 detector into an intelligent, rebuildable, low-cost measurement device for in situ flue gas measurement. This smart probe features a local LCD display and infrared pushbutton operation for local adjustment of the instrument and calibration control. Hart communication protocol allows easy configuration of the instrument as well as up-to-the-second information on all process variables and diagnostic tools. The Yokogawa ZR202 smart probe offers customers a lower cost of product ownership by significantly reducing installation costs from tubing, wiring and conduit.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
