Krohne wins major water treatment analyser order

March 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Eskom recently undertook to upgrade Duvha power station just outside Witbank. This project which encompasses the upgrade of the demineralisation plant was awarded to ABB Automation. The on-line liquid analysis section of the contract was recently awarded to Krohne.

The scope of supply includes silica, sodium, pH, conductivity, turbidity and total organic carbon analysers.

"Krohne renowned in the areas of Krohne level and flow measurement regards its liquid analysis range of products as a very important part of the South African instrumentation/process control market," says Gordon Duff of Krohne.

"We see this market internationally, as well as nationally, as a sector continuously gaining importance and further recognition due to environmental legislation by governments and corporate social responsibility programmes by organisation. Additionally, in the case of power generation, optimisation of processes and efficient electricity production is a major priority."

The range of Krohne's liquid analysis environmental monitoring equipment, namely Zellweger Analytics - Polymetron, has been specifically designed to cater and meet the needs of the wastewater, drinking water and pure water industries.

The importance of on-line measurement will, due to the factors already mentioned, become an integral part of most organisations liquid analysis procedures, off-line occasional measurement will not suffice in the long term. Zellweger Analytics - Polymetron, due to its worldwide exposure is able to pool a large base of experience and application knowledge to solve most of the world's drinking, wastewater and pure water analysis problems.

In total, 42 distribution outlets in 42 different countries worldwide with full service facilities support the Zellweger Analytics - Polymetron range of on-line analysers.

As a result of the frequency of such liquid analysis equipment use increases, lesser maintenance automatically becomes a prerequisite and is achieved by monitoring and predicting worldwide trends to provide the most modern equipment for the end-users benefit.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
