New AS-interface concept sets safety standards

July 2001 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

IFM Electronic has introduced a new range of safety-related components, which integrate with its AS-interface system. It is now possible for users to incorporate all binary switching safety-related components such as emergency-stop pushbuttons, protective light attachments and protective door-locking devices. Only one bus cable is required for the transmission of safe and non-safe data, and full compatibility with all other AS-interface components according to EN 50295 is ensured.

The main advantage of the system is the common use of standard and safety-related components. The existing ASi network includes ASi masters, power supplies and slaves, and this is complemented by a safety monitor and safe ASi slaves. These new components allow both safe and non-safe ASi slaves to be easily combined. The maximum response time is 35 ms.

The AS-interface Safety at Work components are based on the standard ASi protocol allowing the system to transmit safety-related information. The basis is the transmission of dynamic code 8x4-bit data sequences, which are stored in every safe ASi slave. During installation and start-up the safety monitor must 'learn' the code sequences.

While in operation, the safety monitor constantly compares the target sequence with the current sequence of the safe ASi slave. If the safe slave provides a wrong code sequence, for example a 4x0-bit, the safety monitor switches off.

Safety monitors can be positioned at any point in the ASi system allowing certain machines and specific areas in the plant to be switched off. The AS-interface Safety at Work components are approved up to the control category 4 to EN 954-1 and are TüV and BIA certified.
