Programmable logic controllers

A short course presented by the Cape Technikon's Centre for Continuing Education

This course will enable the user to understand the hardware structure of the PLC and configure and programme the PLC, using all ladder logic operations, timers and arithmetical functions. It is intended for technical people involved in the installation of new projects and maintenance of equipment, which are controlled by PLCs.

Course outline

The course will include the following modules:

1. Historical overview of PLCs.

2. PLC hardware.

3. PLC structure.

4. Ladder logic programming.

5. Registers, function blocks, timers and counters.

6. Basic arithmetic.

7. Backup and restore.

8. Fault finding exercise.

Assessment and certification

Participants will be assessed on their project and practical work. A Cape Technikon certificate will be awarded to successful participants.

Admission requirements

Senior certificate or equivalent. In the case of mature students, suitable industry experience will be accepted as entrance to the course.

Engineering Building, Tennant Street, District Six Campus - ample parking in secure area.

Dates and times

Monday, 27 August 2001, 17:30 to 19:30.

Duration

40 hours, comprising a 2-hour session every Monday and Wednesday for 10 weeks.

Course fee

R2 000 per person payable in full on enrolment - course fees are not refundable.

Enrolment and enquiries

Personal enrolment will take place from 6 to 20 August 2001 between 08:30 and 17:30 Monday to Thursday and between 08:30 and 16:00 on Friday, at: Room 3.16, Engineering Building, Tennant Street, District Six Campus, Cape Town.
