RS Components recently supported the solar car team from Japan’s Tokai University, who participated in the World Solar Challenge – a car race held in Australia last year. The race car used HIT solar cells supported with high-capacity lithium-ion batteries provided by Panasonic. The body was formed from super lightweight Toray carbon fibre material, which enabled the weight of the vehicle to be reduced to 140 kg.
After a gruelling race over 3000 km and four days, Tokai University’s solar car team came in first. This marks their second consecutive victory at the race, made even more challenging this time by bushfires in the Northern Territory.
