Multiple channel constant current LED power supply

January 2012 Electrical Power & Protection

Mean Well has introduced the first 185 W AC/DC multiple channel constant current output LED power supply, the LDV-185 series. With a built in active PFC function, these units can offer 6 CH/700 mA or 12 CH/350 mA constant current outputs. Different from Mean Well’s other LED power supplies, the LDV-185 power supplies have built in DC/DC constant current LED driver ICs. This means they can ensure the balance of output current from each channel and reduce the EMI interference of the lighting system, resulting in a long LED life. The series has two models, Blank type and D-type.

The Blank type has basic features without a timer dimming function, while this function is an optional extra in the D-type. After the system is powered on, the D type model starts up the internal timer, which is controlled by the MCU. The pre-set counting program allows up to three different time periods (four different brightness levels) to be set in order to adjust the output current in each period. To resist harsh outdoor environments, they are sealed to meet IP67 standards, and are designed with an aluminium case and stainless steel screws.

Featuring a 180–295 VAC input, the LDV-185 series is suitable for general 230 VAC mains input, and can also be operated under 277 VAC input in North America. With a built-in active PFC function, the series complies with harmonic current limitation as per EN61000-3-2 Class C (>75% load). It also fulfils PF>0.9 if loading is over 75% and has 4 kV surge immunity (EN61000-4-5). With up to date LLC topology, the LDV-185 has up to 88% of peak efficiency (based on the same LED quantity for each channel/total wattage >120 W), so it can be cooled by free air convection from -30 to +70° ambient temperature, thereby meeting the requirements for outdoor installations. Standard functions include protection for short circuit, overload, over voltage, and over temperature.

These power units are equipped with a 18 AWG*3C (with FG)/30 cm input cable and a 22 AWG*13C/15 cm output cable with 15 pin waterproof connector as well as a 22 AWG*12C/15 cm cable with 12 pin waterproof connector. They also comply with EN61347-2-13 (LVD) and CE (EN55015/EN61547) standards. This means they are suitable for all kinds of outdoor LED lighting applications, in particular LED lighting fixtures with a multiple channel driving design.
