Student at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology wins with entry focused on industrial plant safety engineering.
Honeywell has announced the winner of its fourth annual student competition dedicated to the encouragement of design and innovation in the process industry. This year’s competition focused on the use of Honeywell Process Solutions’ (HPS) dynamic process simulation technology, UniSim. The 2011 winner is Igor Krylov from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology for his entry entitled ‘UniSim design simulation combined with first principles modelling for industrial plant safety engineering’.
Igor was presented with his award by Orhan Genis, vice president of sales, Honeywell Process Solutions-Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) during the conference opening ceremony in Baveno, Italy where HPS is currently holding its annual EMEA Users’ Group Conference. As winner of the 2011 competition, Igor will be attending the full three-day conference and will have the opportunity to present his winning ideas to the more than 700 attendees. In addition, Igor’s professor and project advisor, Victor Dozortsev, will be able to choose a training course for himself or a colleague at one of the HPS’ automation colleges in EMEA.
Igor’s winning entry focused on the use of UniSim design-based simulation to verify findings achieved using first principles modelling. The purpose of the research was to determine effective and safe ammonia process modes (temperature, pressure) to guarantee prescribed values of methane, oxide and carbon dioxide content within the reformate. The results were used in the verification of ammonia operator training systems and may be incorporated into new alarm technology for real ammonia production facilities.
“Since the inception of HPS’ EMEA student competition four years ago, we have been overwhelmed by the quality of entries received from students all over the region,” said Orhan Genis. “As we continue to face the ongoing challenge of attracting new talent into the process industries, it is incredibly reassuring to know that there are young engineers of Igor’s calibre out there with fresh ideas and thinking that can ensure its future prosperity for many years to come.”
