Columbus Stainless plant in Middelburg is satisfied with the power quality monitoring system, which was bought two years ago from Bryanston-based TLC Software. The system was chosen after a thorough market research locally as well as overseas on available equipment.
Columbus Stainless' Team Manager Frikkie Jordaan explains: "At the time, we were generating voltage flicker from our 90 MVA arc furnace in excess of 300% of the allowed levels acceptable by Eskom. TLC's Power Quality Monitoring System is the only unit to conform to the IEC 61000-4-15 standard on flicker as well as the NRS 048 standard on power quality.
"Since installation we can monitor all quality of power both from internal and external sources as well as Eskom voltage dips. The system continuously stores electrical values directly to the hard-drive, allowing in-depth analysis to be carried out. The detailed reports of any voltage/current disturbances enable us to establish what kind of dip proof equipment has to be installed to regulate our furnace to acceptable standards."
Jordaan is also impressed with TLC's after-sales service: "Unscheduled software changes have been designed as new information is required when problems arise at the plant."
Jordaan says the high-resolution waveform capturing of the recorder and the powerful analysis capabilities make the recorder a unique and powerful companion in maintaining a high quality of electrical supply to the 'state-of-the-art' stainless plant. "I recommend the TLC recorder to any high-tech production company where power supply quality is critical."
