Westplex is offering the RTCU (remote telemetry and control unit), which it says is a unique combination of a powerful, easily programmable control unit with digital and analog I/O, integrated with a GSM, DECT or UHF communication module. This combination is intended for use in many different control, datalogging and surveillance applications, which would usually require the combination of a separate control unit (eg a programmable logic controller), and an external communications unit.
One of the major applications of the RTCU is remote surveillance. It is possible to construct low-priced standalone systems, which are able to control and/or supervise processes in distant localities where there is no access to telephone lines.
The system can be implemented so that during normal conditions it manages the control and surveillance of the process by itself, but should an alarm occur, the system can deliver an SMS (short message service) message, a voice-message or e-mail to a predefined receiver. The system can also be controlled by sending SMS messages to it.
Because the RTCU supports DTMF (keypad-phone) signalling and voice messaging, the unit can be programmed so that an operator can control and monitor the system from any type of phone.
