The RM96xx series of radio modems takes the doubt out of the use of radio data communications in industrial applications, says Rotrax Technologies. Produced by RDT, the RM96xx series is recognised by world-leading control equipment manufacturers as one of the best available.
Radio-based communications can save the cost and disruption associated with the installation of cables for such applications as PLC networks, scada and variable message sign systems. If there are line rental or call charges to pay, the savings are even greater.
Over the years, RDT have gained a wealth of experience in the supply of radio modems into industrial applications and as a result they are able to advise potential users on trouble-free system implementation. They are able to supply detailed application notes regarding the use of their products with many PLCs and indeed, are the only European manufacturer officially approved by Rockwell Automation in their Encompass programme.
As with all RDT modem products, the RM96xx series provides a fully transparent operation regardless of the serial data protocol. Over-air speeds of up to 16 Kbps are achievable with bandwidth at 25 kHz and 8 Kbps at 12,5 kHz bandwidth for South Africa. Serial data can be input at various baud rates up to 19 200 bps.
Access to all user configurable parameters is possible using the on-board switches and operational status is easily monitored using the standard LED indicators. Models currently available include a PCB module intended for OEM customers, an aluminium housed model and an IP67 housed unit with integral power supply. A brief summary of features includes addressing capability, user selectable RF power level and frequency of operation, built-in repeater facility, forward error correction (FEC), automatic repeat request, MODBUS compatibility and Hayes mode which emulates a PSTN modem. Commissioning features include test modes, received signal strength indication and LED indication of radio and I/O status.
The RM9600 utilises RDT's multichannel UHF transceiver that is available as a separate module to OEM customers wishing to take advantage of the design, manufacturing quality and performance. The RM9600 products carry the CE mark and meet various European, UK and worldwide radio approval specifications including ETS 300 113, ETS 300 220, MPT1329 and SATRA approval for South Africa.
