Conveying attendance data from remote locations

May 2011 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Large enterprises face the challenge of collecting vast amounts of data pertaining to employee attendance. In many cases data must be captured at several locations, but the payrolls are calculated elsewhere – sometimes even in another country. Another ‘catch’ is that attendance data is highly sensitive and confidential information.

Linxberg Technologies developed a unique system based on the Unitronics Vision PLCs that offers enterprises an easy solution. Its time and attendance modules identify employees via any type of card reader (magnetic, Barcode, Proximity) in conjunction with fingerprint verification for absolute certainty. The card reader and biometric device forward the information to the Unitronics PLC+HMI integrated devices. The PLC holds employees data, shifts, current and future schedules and versatile schedule restriction modes in its smart data tables. The module then transfers the large files via Ethernet (requires a separate module), RS232, RS485 or telephone line – all these options are built-in to the PLCs.

Horan, Martello and Morrone, a New York CPA firm, one of Linxberg’s customers, calculates the payrolls for many large healthcare facilities. Collecting the information via wireless Ethernet enables a secure data to its offices and eliminates the need for cross country travel.

One of Vision’s greatest system advantages for Linxberg is its integrated touch screen operator panel. The HMI provides the attendance modules with a clear and secure ATM-like display that enables employees to enter attendance information easily and to check shifts and schedules. The PLC also offers several levels of password protection to ensure secure transactions and personal information access.

Having a PLC at the core of the attendance module provides Linxberg with maximum flexibility and enables it to add product features independently. In addition, the Unitronics product range enables a choice of PLC+HMI that precisely matches the requirements. “We are always kept abreast of new developments by Unitronics,” says Linxburg development manager Alex Zeif. “We are considering using Unitronics new Vision570 in future models, the colour operator panel will offer our clients a new level of user-interface sophistication.”
