Plug-and-measure technology

March 2011 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Intelligent technology provides data for the efficient qualitatively mature production.

Measurement should be a simple and intuitive operation, ie, production personnel must be able to interpret complex data and get meaningful results easily. Plug-and-measure is a way to achieve this through the use of TEDS (transducer electronic data sheets) technology, automatic compensation of environmental conditions and automatic connection testing.

Universal systems recoup costs most rapidly over the long term. The most effective are those that replace several specialised devices, making time-intensive test bench retooling superfluous as they can measure all parameters reliably and can support all current transducer technologies. The perfect measuring chain also includes powerful analysis software for post-processing. Only complete evaluation ensures permanent success.

All costs are relevant, including hidden costs. These range from procurement to commissioning and from operation to replacement. An apparently inexpensive product which, due to time-consuming commissioning, generates 10 times the personnel costs, is expensive in total cost aspects. Simulation software is a sensible alternative to hardware supported measurement technology, but only if there is sufficient data available to verify results. Alternatively, plug-and-measure where one manufacturer provides a matched measuring chain without interface problems is a good choice.

Smaller providers usually need the help of system integrators to configure systems that must interface with products from other manufacturers. But how future proof are these systems? Future security means continuous support and spare parts delivery even after several years. This includes software upgrades for new operating system versions along with the economic stability of the provider and innovative know-how. With HBM, users are equipped for the future. The long-term experience of Esteq/HBM engineers, in close cooperation with numerous customers, led to the evolution of the plug-and-measure concept and intuitive operation at all levels of the measuring chain.
