Motion Control & Drives

Yaskawa drives do it all

Make energy saving your business.

In recent years, the efficient use of energy has received significantly more attention and become recognised as one of the most important cost-effective ways to meet the demands of sustainable development for the future.

World energy consumption has risen by 45% since 1980 and is projected to be 70% higher by 2030. Authorities around the world are calling for more energy savings in new structures.

Locally, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) and the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) are planning to implement new tariffs with a view to effect and encourage a 12% overall reduction in energy consumption by 2015. In addition, the decision was made to penalise users who do not reach the prescribed energy savings.

It is becoming apparent that energy consumption and saving is something that cannot be taken lightly, and that it will take far more than just changing a few light bulbs and adding a few soft starters to make a difference. By now, we should all be consciously and constantly trying to lower our ‘carbon footprint’ – something that is especially pertinent for those in the business sector. But what exactly does it mean for your business? What can you do as a business owner or manager?

Varispeed has some answers

Varispeed is one of a few companies that are working closely with businesses to combine innovation and cutting-edge technology to help engineers explore and achieve what seems out of reach – finding energy saving solutions that are viable in today’s market place. The company, part of the Hudaco group, believe that it is necessary to capture what is desirable (a vision for the future), explore what is possible and engage fully with delivering what is viable (affordable effective solutions). It understands that saving energy is not only about saving money, but also about saving the environment. Yaskawa variable speed drives do it all.

A variable speed drive (VSD) is a system for controlling the rotational speed of an alternating current (AC) electric motor by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor. These drives are used in building automation, industrial, pumping, agricultural, irrigation, and water/wastewater applications to control the speed of fans and pumps in various systems. But they do more than just reduce energy and cost:

* Drives reduce fan noise and duct rumble, thus reducing tenant complaints.

* They reduce current during motor starting, lowering demand charges – another significant part of the electricity bill.

* VSDs are less expensive to maintain than mechanical controls.

* The inherent soft-starting reduces wear and tear on motors, sheaves, belts, couplings, pump impellors and other system components.

* Drives provide accurate and repeatable control, eliminating frequent readjustments.

Companies that consume large amounts of electricity can no longer ignore the benefit of installing variable speed drives on particularly fan, pump and compressor applications.

Varispeed invites you to contact them for a free audit to show how much you can save. A sales engineer will demonstrate how payback periods for drives are usually less than two years and in some instances could even be less than a year. Visit www.varispeed.co.za for free energy savings estimation software. It is available for download and is very easy to use. You will also find an energy savings worksheet available that will help to calculate the energy savings for centrifugal fans and pumps, and compare variable speed drive performance to other methods of control (based on motor output or kW).
