Wireless remote access

New Beyond Wireless application makes wireless monitoring and control easier than ever.
Local specialist wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) communication solutions provider, Beyond Wireless, has developed a wireless remote access application for the Apple iPhone and iPad and other new generation smartphones and tablet computers. The application allows Beyond Wireless clients to access real-time data remotely and securely. Ian Lester, Beyond Wireless CEO, notes that technicians can now run diagnostics, maintain and calibrate various types of industrial automation and analytical equipment remotely, from anywhere in the world.
“Let us say for example you wanted to run some diagnostics and then calibrate a gas or liquid analyser on a platinum mine, hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away,” he says. “Ordinarily you would have to dispatch an engineer who would have to drive or fly to the site, then get to the instrument, which could be located on top of a stack 150 metres above the ground, just to perform a 20-minute task.
“If you are a Beyond Wireless client, we not only monitor that instrument for you, allowing you to access its data online and receive condition-based alarms via e-mail and sms, but, using the latest generation of smartphones or tablet computers to access the human machine interface remotely, we effectively put the engineer directly in front of the instrument without him ever having to leave his office chair.
“The efficiencies this creates are incredible. Engineers no longer need to travel long distances, which obviously saves time, money and fuel, but in addition this solution also increases the productivity since they can now ‘visit’ 10 or more customers in a working day as opposed to only one. They can actually be in multiple places at once – on a mine and in a petrochemical refinery all at the same time.”
Lester explains that the application is already operational within the mining sector and will shortly be deployed at one of South Africa’s major petrochemical companies. “It is interesting because it is the first application to our knowledge where GSM technology will have been used in a petrochemical environment, where traditionally, cellphones are not allowed. Accordingly we have designed the platform to be intrinsically safe, which opens up a whole new world of possibilities for GPRS-based monitoring and control in the petrochemical industry.”
