ZigBee wireless sensors

September 2010 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Self-powered wireless systems connects to existing 2 wire 4-20 mA instruments.

R&C Instrumentation has announced the launch of a range of ZigBee wireless sensors and system components manufactured by UK-based Industrial Interface. The wireless transmitters available for RTD, thermocouple and vibration can either be battery powered or any other 3-36 VDC source can be utilised. Battery life is typically 2-5 years for update rates of 1 second to 1 hour.

In addition, the units are able to interface to any existing 2-wire 4-20 mA loop via the Z-Head unit that runs the existing 2-wire system from internal batteries and requires no external power. The device can be networked back to a single or multiple Z-Port system and then via serial communications, or single 4-20 mA, back to the control system. The system is suited for rotating or difficult to reach equipment or when it is not possible to connect a 2 wire system to the measurement area.

The Z-Port ZigBee network coordinator can receive up to 1028 process variables from wireless sensors and make them available to any Ethernet or RS232/485 network. Communication protocols include standards such as Modbus RTU although any custom protocol can be programmed into the unit at the factory.

The Z-Port features a local display which can be used to obtain the current value of any of the wireless sensors connected, together with other details such as signal strength and the time since last update. Other products in the range include the Z-200 cable replacement system and the Z-Root ZigBee router, which can be used to extend the range of a ZigBee network.
