Becker's collision avoidance systems
July 2010
Data Acquisition & Telemetry
Becker Electronics offers comprehensive collision avoidance systems (CAS) ranging from simple low cost single channel start up solutions to integrated multitechnology systems that encompass all aspects of mine communications. The CAS are designed to prevent accidents between men and machines, or machines and other machines that could result in fatalities, injuries, damage or down time on the mine.
“Collision and personnel avoidance systems play a vital role in safety underground,” says Albert Bower, managing director of Becker Electronics. “The systems, installed in the various vehicles and cap lamp battery packs, act as an early warning indicator for both vehicle operators and pedestrians. This is very necessary in the harsh environment underground as it is not always possible for vehicle operators to be fully aware of other miners and vehicles in their immediate vicinity.”
Becker’s systems consist of personnel and vehicle tags and the machine mounted devices which detect them. The company’s latest tri-technology system was developed to overcome limitations that existed in the industry. This new solution provides levels of audible and visual warning proportional to the position of the threat and also has the ability to stop a vehicle, should this become necessary. The products can be deployed using a phased approach to minimise initial capital outlay.
A further advantage of the multitechnology approach is that mines are now able to monitor both slow and fast moving equipment on the surface or underground. The Becker personnel avoidance transponder tag warns miners of vehicles in close proximity by means of a flashing light and buzzer. The number of flashes indicates the number of vehicles in a miner’s vicinity. The detection range can be set to suit specific requirements.
Becker provides systems for new and existing installations manufactured to stringent international standards. Approvals have been achieved in Europe, Russia, America, Australia and South Africa to ensure the products are safe and reliable in all mining conditions. Specifications include IA regulated (fiery) mines with consent from the Department of Minerals and Energy.
