These two products present particularly difficult environments, with heavy dust atmospheres, temperature changes, density changes and varying product characteristics (humidity, carbon percentage etc.) Fly-ash is found in all smoke scrubbers (electrostatic extraction of the ash) associated commonly with power stations, and coal/fossil fuel fired processes. Cement production is one of the principal final uses for fly-ash. Carbon black production is always associated to crude oil refineries, and has a wide variety of final users, including tyre production, colouring etc.
The application of the 'single probe' version of the Krohne BM100 reflex radar level transmitter on fine powders such as fly-ash and carbon black has been an immediate success, replacing other instruments that have categorically failed. In this context, the BM100 has provided the customer with the first viable instrument choice for this application. The instrument has replaced ultrasonic and capacitance level switches. The unique advantage of Krohne's reflex radar level meter is that it is not disturbed by even the most heavily charged dust atmospheres, nor by product coating of the probe. When working in direct mode the BM100's functionality is independent of the product's characteristics.
