In 2008, SKF South Africa took a strategic decision to restructure its retail network in line with the SKF Group strategy to serve its industrial customers through independent industrial distributors.
“The main reasons for the restructuring are to improve our service levels to our customers and to provide them with black empowered supply channels for SKF products and services. The restructuring strategy for the SKF South Africa branches was approved by the SKF Group CEO in February 2010,” says SKF South Africa managing director, Gavin Garland.

“SKF has signed agreements with Bearing Services Africa (BSA) and Citi Bearings and Seals (Citi), currently our two larger authorised distributors for Skefko Pretoria, SKF Nelspruit, SKF Roodepoort and SKF Rustenburg. BSA has officially taken over Skefko Pretoria and Citi the SKF Roodepoort branch. BSA will take over SKF Nelspruit in July and Citi will take over Rustenburg by October. All SKF’s existing SKF staff will be transferred to BSA or Citi.”
Garland adds that through strong support from distributors like BSA and Citi, and by expanding its product and service offerings, SKF South Africa has enjoyed excellent growth. He is convinced that these restructuring activities will provide benefits to customers, branch staff and to SKF. The restructuring plan for the Cape and KZN regions will be announced in due course.
Robin Briggs, SKF distributor development manager, concludes: “Our authorised distributors are an extension of SKF; they are situated closer to our customer base, plan and manage stock more effectively and have the ability to service end users, meeting their demands for quality and reliable products and services that add value and reduce total cost of ownership.”
