Formosa Chemicals implements Honeywell’s OneWireless solution for improved process measurement.
Formosa Chemicals and Fibre Corporation (FCFC) is one of Taiwan’s major manufacturers of chemicals, fibres, petrochemical and plastic materials. At one of its Rayon plants in Yilan, the company wanted to find ways to overcome taking manual temperature measurements on three of its rotary machines, and to eliminate the deviation in the installed infrared sensors being experienced due to weather changes.
The challenge
The company had to routinely dispatch its technicians to the field to manually record the inner temperatures on three rotary machines which stored spinning solutions. Also, the technicians had to monitor the extra infrared sensors installed to measure the surface temperatures at the machines. “Our plant data was not reliable, and it was very costly to collect this critical data from the traditional hard-wired transmitters due to the manual labour involved,” said CM Jeng, section chief, FCFC.
Honeywell OneWireless network architecture
The solution
FCFC turned to Honeywell and its wireless solutions and implemented its OneWireless Starter Kit and XYR 6000 wireless temperature transmitters to help alleviate these problems and improve the reliability of data collection.
The OneWireless Starter Kit includes two of Honeywell’s XYR 6000 wireless transmitters, enabling automated monitoring in areas where hard-wired transmitters are too costly, difficult or time consuming to implement. Additional sensors can be added to the transmitters in the kit – which includes devices for accurately monitoring gauge pressure, absolute pressure, differential pressure, temperature and corrosion. The XYR 6000 wireless transmitter line also includes an analogue input interface for adding wireless capabilities to 4–20 mA devices. The devices wirelessly transmit their measurements to a gateway or to multiple communications nodes, called multinodes. The multimode/gateway also interfaces with Honeywell’s PC-based Wireless Software, which offers configuration capabilities and communications with a control system.
Honeywell’s OneWireless Starter Kit provided the company with an introduction to Honeywell’s industrial wireless solutions and opened the door for future plant and company adoption. “Honeywell provided us with the success we needed to consider implementing a wireless solution at our other plants,” commented Jeng. “Our employees welcomed both the solution and the assistance provided by the local Honeywell engineers who helped us with the project.”
Jeng added that several other benefits accrued from the partnership with Honeywell, which included:
* More accurate and reliable temperature measurement after replacing the infrared sensors.
* Time and money saved by eliminating costly hard-wired cable.
* Improved process measurement with increased reliability of data.
* Quick-start implementation provided a fast return on investment.
