Wireless industrial Ethernet – 2,4 GHz and beyond.

Wireless Ethernet in the popular 2,4 GHz band is becoming crowded. For the typical home and office user the occasional loss in signal is tolerable, but for industrial applications this is often unacceptable.

What is the solution? Firstly, do not underestimate the value of proper planning. Most WLAN bands have several channels and selecting an unused channel is an important step in avoiding interfering signals. However, the established 2,4 GHz band has become so crowded that this is sometimes not possible. And it is not only WLAN devices that are using the 2,4 GHz band – items such as cordless telephones and Bluetooth devices are often contending for the same space.

Other options include migrating to a less congested frequency band. Wireless industrial-grade Ethernet modems in different frequency bands with various throughput options are being offered by Elpro Technologies:

* Elpro 805U-E Wireless Ethernet Modem (869 MHz/76,8 Kbits/s): This modem is ideal for applications with relatively low throughput requirements (eg, PLCs, scada) and is well-suited for non line-of-sight applications. Up to 5 km range.

* Elpro 240U-E/245U-E Wireless Ethernet Modem (2,4 GHz/54 Mbits/s/ IEEE 802.11b/g): Widely used modem, ideal for extending and integrating into existing 2,4 GHz WLAN links, and has a good distance/speed trade off.

* Elpro 245U-E-A Wireless Ethernet Modem (5 GHz/108 Mbits/s/IEEE 802.11a): High speed – ideal for industrial video applications and for use as a wireless backbone. More channels than 802.11b/g (non-overlapping) and is a relatively unused band. Allowable power of up to 1 W.

All Elpro Wireless Industrial Ethernet modems include:

* Additional built-in RS232 and RS485 ports – can be used for industrial equipment that has serial interfaces.

* Field-proven robust industrial design – lifetime warranty.

* Industrial-grade security.

* Remote configuration and diagnostics over the wireless link.

* Modbus Master capability for both Modbus TCP and serial Modbus RTU.

* Remote I/O (digital/analog/pulse) add-on capability.
