Battery powered data-logger

December 2009 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

VA Solutions has designed a uniquely packaged battery powered GPRS logger for the capture of data from field devices with both analogue and digital inputs. Its compact design ensures easy mounting. All electronics are housed in a rugged IP67 electrical junction box disguising the contents (SIM card, battery pack and aerial) and not drawing attention to the public eye. Other features include its internally mounted aerial and D-type battery cell configuration. It is a locally designed product and is manufactured and supported in South Africa.

Data Transfer Sequence

GPRS:

Data is logged at pre-determined intervals and stored on non-volatile memory. This data is then transmitted via GPRS to a central server where further trending and reporting is done. The data can then be accessed via a client login page on the internet. Data is protected by unique client login usernames and passwords. Low-cost, high-speed data transfer is made possible using GPRS. Full alarming is available by e-mail and SMS.

SMS: (optional)

The SMS feature allows instant alarm notification for any of the inputs. Set-points can be programmed via SMS as well as the enabling/disabling of up to five recipients for the alarms. In the event of no GPRS reception, SMS can be used to transmit logged data, but at a much lower resolution, frequency and higher cost. The unit can also be interrogated via SMS; this will result in a snap shot or the condition of all inputs to be sent to any GSM mobile cell phone.

Power supply

* Source: 3,6 VDC lithium D size battery.

* Lifespan: 12 months (logging and data transfer rate dependent).

Inputs

* Digital: potential-free contact.

* 5 pulse.

* Analogue: 4–20mA.

* 1–5 VDC.

* Optional 0–25 bar pressure sensor powered by module.

Outputs

* Digital: FET switching.

* TTL source/sink.

Applications include reservoir level data-logging and municipal water consumption measurement via water meter pulse outputs.
