In the chemicals processing industry valves frequently come into contact with highly aggressive fluids which cause the shortcomings of the materials used in valve construction to become apparent very quickly.

The major disadvantage of using metals in valves is their poor corrosion resistance as the coating and sealing materials used are not impermeable. Thermoplastics, in contrast, are corrosion resistant and many have excellent resistance to chemicals. In this regard, PTFE has proved to be one of the best.

Exceptional corrosion resistance

The new butterfly valves, type 567/568 PVDF/PTFE seal from Georg Fischer, now offer maximum reliability for processes and operations as required by the chemicals industry. By combining the two high-performance plastics PVDF and PTFE the result is a homogeneous plastic piping system in which the valves fulfil all the requirements for aggressive media.

Royce Water Systems’ Kobus Franken says, “Due to the use of these high performance plastics, the valves exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion. The valves are exceptionally resistant to acids, salt solutions and hydrocarbons. This is made possible by the integration of the PTFE profile seal in the passage. Additionally the combination of materials enables excellent temperature resistance from -20 to 120°C.”

Double eccentric design

Many butterfly valves are built according to a centric operating principle; type 567/568 has a double eccentric design. This means the disc does not touch the seal in the open position, thus ensuring good frictional behaviour and less wear and tear. In addition, the double eccentric design protects the butterfly valves against pressure surges. The valves therefore have a longer service life and require less maintenance.

The 567/568 PTFE butterfly valves are available for manual operation with a hand lever and manual reduction gear, or as pneumatically or electrically actuated models from DN 50 to DN 300. Lug and wafer types are available for end or intermediate installations respectively. The modular design principle allows users to exchange individual system components quickly, easily and cost effectively.
