Siemens Cape showcases process instrumentation

November 2009 News

As part of an initiative to grow market share in the Western Cape and highlight the complete range of process instrumentation available for the food and beverage (F&B) industry, Siemens Southern Africa recently hosted a road show at the Neethlingshoff and Nederburg wine estates.

Rusdien Osman, Siemens account manager in the Western Cape for Automation Systems and Low Voltage Switchgear, says the F&B industry represents an area of strategic focus for the company in the region. He adds that the company’s range of measuring instruments, flowmeters, weighing systems, process analytical instrumentation, drive technologies and other automation components can be combined into seamlessly integrated process automation solutions for its customers in the fishing, brewing, wine and food processing industries.

“As process instrumentation is an integral component for these industries in the Western Cape, we, together with our regional partner Indecon, our regional MD Yusuf Moosa and Sensors and Communication Business Unit Manager, Ryan Chetty, hosted the F&B road show to highlight our cost effective Siemens brands and reinforce the reputation of products that are backed by local service and support,” he says.

According to Osman, Siemens has made numerous acquisitions in the last decade, with the stated aim of becoming the number one supplier of process instrumentation and automation solutions in the world. The company currently markets measuring instruments for pressure and temperature; electromagnetic/coriolis, ultrasonic and clamp-on flowmeters, level and weighing instruments; process analytical instruments and recorders; sensors and industrial communication; and automation, building and drive technologies.

“Our focus during the F&B road show was based on Ryan’s message, namely that Siemens aims to become the top company in the world through brand leadership and a complete product offering,” he says. “Our positioners are amongst the best in the world with SIL2 certification and can be used on practically any type of valve. Also, Siemens Automation, Industry and Drive Technologies offer a complete industrial portfolio from sensors and communication to automations systems, switchgear, drives and mechanical technology.”

He adds that the company’s process instrumentation devices are seamlessly integrated in automation systems, with plant transparency achieved using Siemens Software Process Device Manager (PDM), which manifests itself as a single programming environment.

“Through the combination of SIMATIC PCS 7 or STEP7 and the PDM we are able to program instruments via Profibus for overall plant commissioning, monitoring, maintenance and asset management,” he says. “The Siemens Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) concept results in shorter engineering and integration time with 100% control of sensor/actuator plant reporting and transparency.”

While Siemens’ advanced process controls were much in evidence, Osman says the F&B road show is not all just technology and tiring presentations. Delegates were also able to sample the results of advanced process control and expert cellar mastery at a much appreciated wine tasting event. “I’m sure the sweet taste left on the palate will remain a pleasant memory for some time to come,” he concludes.
