Temperature Measurement

A paperless world

September 2009 Temperature Measurement

Adding to its range of process and temperature controllers Temp-Tek now offers the choice of paper and paperless recorders. The Brainchild VR-06 is a low cost, high quality, 6 channel process recorder with 163 mm TFT full colour screen, Ethernet IP and 200 ms sampling for all six channels and a definition of 640 x 480 pixels. Recordings on this instrument are accomplished by means of an SD card mounted under the front panel. The recorder can re-play the information or the SD onto a simple USB card reader for loading onto a regular PC. Alternatively the recorder can be permanently connected to a PC via Ethernet. The additional software required is available at nominal cost.

Multiple options for the display of recordings are available at the touch of a button. These displays take the form of bar-graphs digital, horizontal/vertical or numerical display.

In the paper era when an inspector or foreman was required to validate charts and readings from a recorder it was acceptable to sign and date the paper chart. This is not possible with a paperless recorder.

Brainchild overcomes this problem by implementing Federal Drug Administration FDA 21 CFR part 11 which allows the inspector/foreman to digitally sign data from the recorder for verification purposes. The software allows operators varying levels of access that can be programmed to expire after a predetermined amount of time thus keeping the system up to date and preventing unauthorised use.

Temp-Tek says it is presently supplying 15 x VR-06 paperless recorders for this type of application to a large pharmaceutical plant in Midrand. The recorders are to be connected to a hub which will link to existing routers.

“The approval of this type of paperless recorder is growing year-on-year,” says Temp-Tek owner, Roy Embling. “Many users feel a little guilty at consuming vast amounts of paper to record information on conventional recorders, whereas a paperless system conserves paper resources for more practical uses”.

Recorders to suit most applications are available from stock.
