JDSU’s tester for fibre-optic networks.

Comtest has announced that JDSU has added the medium range optical dispersion measurement (MR-ODM) module to its T-BERD/MTS-6000 and –8000 platforms. This single plug-in module includes a patented solution for chromatic (CD) measurements and offers polarisation mode dispersion (PMB) and attenuation profile test functions, making it a compact and integrated solution for field testing fibre-optic networks.

Technicians face the challenge of performing a series of tests in the effort to identify fibre viability for very high-speed transmission systems (10Geth, 40 Gb/s and higher). If not properly managed, CD, PMD and attenuation can cause severe performance degradation issues of transmission quality that needs to operate at peak levels in order to deliver reliable broadband services.

The combination of CD, PMD and attenuation test function enables technicians to validate the fibre link’s compatibility with high-speed DWDM systems, including reconfigurable optical Add/Drop multiplexers (ROADMs). The performance of each individual function also makes the ODM module ideal for characterising fibre at 40 G and higher in the metro and access network areas.

JDSU’s MR-ODM module is ideal for cable and telecom network operators deploying fibre networks to meet growing broadband demand and ensures fibre links operate flawlessly. JDSU enables efficiency through an integrated solution and offers a high dispersion performance for field test solutions by validating about 400 acquisition points in less than 30 seconds.

The MR-ODM module is one of the industry’s only CD, PMD and AP analyser with measurement points across the SCL-bands (1450-1640 mm). It has fast acquisition times, and it is test capable through non-bi-directional components (EDFA, filters and similar components). It has internal and on-line wavelength referencing and has a single input port for any test configuration. The MR-ODM is compatible with plug-in or handheld broadband sources at the far end of the fibre under test.
