Long-range position sensors

August 2009 Sensors & Transducers

New analogue sensor combines range with high accuracy.

Turck has extended its portfolio of linear position sensors with a new magnetic field sensor providing a measuring range of up to 200 mm. Hall effect chains allow the WIM200 sensor in its new Q25 housing to provide high linearity and accuracy over the entire measuring range. This feature allows the sensor to be used in applications that demand highly accurate output signals over long measuring ranges, like pneumatically powered pumps, slides, presses or die cutters. For convenient assembly on a large number of applications, Turck offers a great variety of mounting accessories.

The analogue position sensors can help to implement variable area flowmeters or level monitoring devices into process control systems effectively. On suitable pneumatic cylinders, the WIM200 can also be used for position detection. An additional external magnet allows for even more individual applications. In this way the user can access a cost-effective alternative to other types of position sensors that may be over-designed for certain applications.

The WIM200 consists of up to 50 Hall elements and a microprocessor that processes the input data. The sensor is immune to external magnetic fields because it eliminates interference fields by comparing a total of up to 50 sensor signals. The sensor’s output signal is linear and independent of the magnet’s direction within the cylinder. In this way, the characteristic line can be changed from 0–10 volt to 10–0 volt by simply turning the sensor over. An additional in-range function detects whether the magnet is within measuring range or not, and where it has left the effective range.

Along with the standardised assembly accessories for position sensors, the new Q25 housing comes with additional mounting accessories like slot nuts (to be used on aluminium profiles) that enable the user to find the most convenient assembly for his operations.
